About Richard

For over 30 years, Richard Cooper has provided his clients cost-effective and creative legal solutions to help solve just about any issue.

Richard began his career at a leading Canadian Bay Street law firm. Since 1991, he has run his own practice dedicated to representing private and family-owned businesses, including startups. As a transactional lawyer, Richard has acted on the purchase, sale and financing of commercial and industrial properties, and has prepared asset and share purchase agreements as acquisition counsel for local and national corporations.

Richard also has a broad commercial litigation practice. He has extensive Court experience and has appeared before the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, the Ontario Divisional Court, the Ontario Court of Appeal, and the Tax Court of Canada. Richard has also appeared before the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario and at Arbitrations before the Fruit and Vegetable Dispute Resolution Corporation (DRC). He is a member of both the Ontario and New York State Bars and has appeared in Court in the City of New York to assist clients dealing with cross-border issues.

Richard is known for taking a creative and common sense approach to dispute resolution. He understands when to fight and when to negotiate. Richard understands that problems do not only come up between the hours of 9:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M, and encourages his clients to contact him anytime as needed.

Litigation

Litigation is risky, costly, and sometimes avoidable. Contact us if you anticipate a need to litigate, and we will explore all possible options to resolve your dispute outside of court. Part of our role as counsel is to assess risk and avoid needless litigation in situations where a client is better off avoiding it. That is not to say that we are not prepared to go to court when we need to. We have extensive litigation experience and commonly go up against major law firms in the GTA.
